Watercare Services Limited application to take water from the Waikato River
Watercare Services Limited has applied for resource consent to take water from the Waikato River.
Minister's call in
This application is a proposal of national significance.
The application is for resource consents to take an additional 150,000 cubic metres/day (net) of water from the Waikato River, and for discharges and construction of structures associated with the water take. Watercare is an Auckland Council organisation and the application is for municipal water supply purposes.
The Minister for Environment has issued a direction under section 142 of the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) to call in the resource consent application, and has referred it to a Board of Inquiry. The Board will consider all submissions, hold a hearing (unless no-one wants to be heard), and make a final decision, independently from us and the Minister.
We provide administrative support services to the Board. This ranges from managing the public consultation, organising the logistics of the hearing, to commissioning specialist advice to assist the Board.
Latest update: 10 September 2021
The Board anticipate that the deferred hearing will be held in the same venues as originally planned, pending COVID-19 alert level restrictions and announcements.
- Week 1: Tuesday 5 October until Friday 8 October – FMG Stadium (Hamilton)
- Week 2: Tuesday 12 October until Friday 15 October – Waikato-Tainui College (near Ngāruawāhia)
The Board extends its appreciation to all parties that contributed to the discussions about potential alternative venue options.
Opening legal submissions from the Hamilton City Council and Waipā District Council
The Board has requested that legal counsel lodge their opening legal submissions with the EPA according to the dates in the original hearing schedule. Most opening submissions from legal counsel are now available.
