Application to release two new biocontrols to combat wasps

Decision Date: 16 February 2021

An application to release a beetle and a hoverfly to combat wasps has been approved.

We have approved the release of a beetle and a hoverfly parasitoid to mitigate social wasp populations.

The Tasman District Council, acting on behalf of the Vespula Biocontrol Action Group, made the application to the EPA in September last year. The application was prepared and managed by Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research.

We called for public submissions on the application, and held a public hearing before a decision-making committee in Wellington on 17 December 2020.

The decision was notified on 16 February 2021.

You can read the presentations made to the Decision-making Committee by the applicant, submitters, and the EPA, and all documents relating to the application in our database.
