EPA authorises dumping of fire-damaged fishing vessel

04 May 2020

The fishing vessel, Dong Won 701, will be disposed of in an authorised marine dumping area.

The vessel was operating out of Timaru before it was badly damaged by fire in April 2018.

The owners, DW New Zealand Limited, lodged an application with the EPA for a marine dumping consent so the boat could be disposed of at sea.

The EPA has granted permission to dispose of the vessel in an approved marine dumping site 25 nautical miles south-east of Otago harbour.

The five authorised marine dumping sites, for certain types of waste, are generally in deep water – 25 to 55 miles out to sea – and away from major shipping lanes.
