Applications referred to Local Authorities
The Minister for the Environment may refer an application to a Local Authority if it is not considered to be of national significance.

Ruapehu District Council requested the Minister call in a resource consent application from Telecom Mobile Limited for a proposed tower at the Whakapapa ski field on Mount Ruapehu.
Environment Minister Nick Smith declined a request from Ruapehu District Council to call in a resource consent application from Telecom Mobile Limited for a proposed mobile phone tower at the Whakapapa ski field on Mount Ruapehu.
Dr Smith decided that the application from Telecom Mobile Limited was not or was not part of a proposal of national significance.
Under the Resource Management Act, the Minister may call in a proposal if he considers that it is nationally significant, and can direct it either to a Board of Inquiry, or the Environment Court to be heard and decided.
The application will continue to be processed by Ruapehu District Council.
