Councils seeking enforcement action support

Councils can apply to us for support to investigate non-compliance with the Resource Management Act. Find out how to apply.

This information applies to councils only.

In order to process a request as quickly as possible, it’s important that you provide us with all of the relevant information at the start.

Read through the steps below before making a request for support.

Requests need to be made in writing using our form.

Step 1: Pre-request for support

Before making a request for support, we recommend that you contact us to discuss the matter before moving to Step 2.

Step 2: Complete the request form

Download and complete our request form.

Completed request forms should be sent to investigations@epa.govt.nz.

Step 3: Our decision

We will acknowledge all requests within 5 working days. We will notify you of our decision in writing and may ask for additional information.

Step 4: Initial briefing

If we are going to support your request we will contact you to arrange an initial briefing. It may be necessary for you and us to formally agree on roles and responsibilities.

Timeframes

If we agree to support your request, the length of time we work with you will depend on the nature of the request.

Costs

We will not charge for our services if we agree to support your request. Councils will be responsible for their own costs.
