Permit to import asbestos-containing products

Products with asbestos can only be imported into New Zealand under certain circumstances.

Since 1 October 2016, asbestos-containing products cannot be imported into New Zealand unless:

  • an importation permit has been obtained from us
  • the products are imported solely for the purpose of export and the products will be subject to the control of NZ Customs Service at all times while they are in New Zealand.

Importing asbestos-containing products for export

Products containing asbestos that are imported only for export are under the control of NZ Customs Service. The rules about which goods are subject to control are set out in Section 20 of the Customs and Excise Act 1996.

Permits granted to import asbestos-containing products

These are permits granted under the Imports and Exports (Asbestos-containing Products) Prohibition Order 2016. 

The Customs Clearance Code has been redacted from the decisions.
