The 2009 amendments to the Resource Management Act (1991) established the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). Streamlining the decision making process for nationally significant proposals, such as major infrastructure or public works projects, was a part of these reforms. The EPA is a statutory office housed within the Ministry for the Environment under the Secretary for the Environment.
Te Mana Rauhī Taiao translates as "to protect the mana of the environment" or "the authority to protect the environment".
